PAULO ROMUALDEZ VINLUAN Flatness Vastness III, 2004 Acrylic on canvas, 72 x 96 inches (183 x 244 cm)
FLATNESS VASTNESS...
This series is a poke at the strip mall culture that is quite popular in the Philippines. Weekends, birthdays or family get togethers (only among others) are spent in malls. These super structures house fastfood chains, restaurants, clothing stores and activity centers. Strip malls can be found all over, most of them even built right next to each other. This mall-rat culture is echoed in the work's take on Gulliver's Travels. These monolithic structures act as Gulliver, who appears to be exploring, when in truth it is some what exploiting its surrounding's people and resources.
