Mark Blezinger’s Dreamlike 3D Masterpiece “Nella Cattedrale” Debuts
Renowned for his innovative artistry, Mark Blezinger invites viewers into a mesmerizing, three-dimensional experience with his work “Nella Cattedrale.” This remarkable piece transports the audience into the heart of a majestic neoclassical cathedral. Its upper section is bathed in soft daylight streaming through clerestory windows, while the lower part is cloaked in mystical chiaroscuro, creating an atmosphere of contemplation and wonder.
At the center of this breathtaking scene, a white-clad female figure stands among praying worshippers and a dense crowd of pigeons filling the pews. She holds childlike dolls in her hands, gazing upward as fluttering birds encircle her. To the left, her image seems to echo the Madonna statue in the background. Above, from the cathedral’s dome, a large owl descends dramatically, illuminated by an unseen light source, its trajectory aimed directly at the enigmatic figure below.
Blezinger masterfully incorporates contrasting elements of light and darkness, motion and stillness, chaos and serenity, presenting a meticulously crafted interplay of aesthetic and symbolic depth. The scene is further heightened by delicate sunbeams cutting diagonally across the composition, their trajectory opposing the ominous flight of the owl. A large dark bird at the center bottom anchors the viewer's gaze, serving as both a visual and technical key to this three-dimensional masterpiece.
This cinematic tableau is brought to life through the groundbreaking autostereoscopic technology of Alioscopy, developed in France by Pierre Allio. The technique, which requires no special glasses, creates an incredibly lifelike spatial representation. As viewers shift their position, the illusion of cinematic movement intensifies, immersing them fully in the scene.
“Nella Cattedrale” combines neoclassical elegance with Blezinger’s distinctive baroque visual approach. His attention to intricate details, paired with Alioscopy's innovative technology, results in a work that is both an intellectual exploration and a sensual feast for the eyes.
As noted by Simone Klein, European Head of the Photographs Department at Sotheby’s, “‘Nella Cattedrale’ is an intelligent, sensual masterpiece that represents the pinnacle of photographic technology.”
The work is also available as a miniature edition, encased in a Plexiglas block with integrated lenticular technology. The dimensions are 298 x 198 x 85 mm, offering collectors a unique, tangible version of Blezinger’s visionary art.
About Mark Blezinger
Mark Blezinger is a pioneer in technical and artistic innovation whose work defies conventional boundaries of time and space. Born in Baden-Baden in 1962, he studied theater and philosophy in Paris, later working with luminaries such as Luc Bondy, Klaus-Michael Grüber, Peter Stein, and Andrzej Wajda at Berlin's Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. In 1989, Blezinger returned to Paris, directing and designing for theaters and festivals across Europe.
Over the years, Blezinger has seamlessly combined his expertise in theater and film with emerging digital techniques. In the late 1990s, he began creating multilayered film stills, transforming them into elaborate 3D images using Alioscopy technology. This innovative approach merges photography and visual sculpture, resulting in works of unparalleled depth and complexity.
Currently, Blezinger is one of the few artists in the world exploring lenticular photography and the only one crafting compositions with Alioscopy’s precision technology. His process involves compiling 60 individual frames, photographed with advanced optical systems, such as an 8-lens real-time camera. These images are meticulously assembled using Alioscopy software, enhanced with a lenticular overlay, and illuminated from behind to create a striking, glasses-free 3D effect.
Mark Blezinger’s works have been exhibited in prestigious international galleries and art fairs, solidifying his reputation as a trailblazer in the art world and a visionary at the forefront of photographic technology.
