English Translation:
NIKOLAI WINTER: Lavish Modesty
27 May 2011 Zurich, Switzerland
It was a tough and long journey: Over 900 hours of work, spread across two years, 23-year-old Nikolai Winter transformed a white Rolls-Royce into a Buddha statue. "I wanted to turn a symbol of luxury into its opposite. The Buddha symbolises modesty and spirituality." The idea came to him when he read Hermann Hesse's
Siddhartha.
The main figure of the Buddha also had to go through a long journey of enlightenment and renounce many things. Consumer society, sustainability, and recycling are the themes of Nikolai Winter's current exhibition,
"Luxury Goods."
His Buddha will remain on display until 13 August at the Mondejar Gallery in Zurich. "It is not for sale." And what is the most valuable possession of the graduate of a business bachelor’s degree from Basel? "Probably my car. No Rolls-Royce, a VW Golf."
